Very good
Our verdictThe Shop-Vac SVX2 utility vac is the documentation review pick for suction rather than for value. Shop-Vac's own store, checked October 21, 2026, lists item 8251205 at $256.91 with a 12 gallon tank, 5.5 peak HP, 140 CFM of maximum airflow, 70 inches of sealed pressure, 370 peak air watts, an 11.6 amp 120 V motor, an 8 ft by 2.5 in. Lock-on hose, a 14 in. floor nozzle, a dolly tool storage basket and a cartridge filter, foam sleeve and high efficiency disposable bag. The 70 inch figure and the 370 air watts are the highest of the four vacs we read that day. Shop-Vac's warranty page states a Full Lifetime Home Use Warranty to the original purchaser only, with filters, accessories and any commercial use excluded. The gaps: the cord is only 12 ft, the shortest here, the page publishes no weight or dimensions, there is no owner rating on the page at all, and the price is $106.92 above the 12 gallon Vacmaster. Buy it for lift. Skip it if the budget is the deciding factor.

What the SVX2 utility vac actually is

Item 8251205 is Shop-Vac's 12 gallon wet/dry utility vacuum built on its SVX2 motor, sold direct from shopvac.com and through retailers.

Shop-Vac's page, checked October 21, 2026, says the SVX2 motor has more power and longer motor life than the company's standard 5.5 peak HP motor, and positions the vac for a workspace, basement or garage. The hose attaches to a rear blower port.

The layout is the main difference from the other three vacs here. This is a dolly unit: the tank sits on a wheeled frame with a tool storage basket and a hose holder rather than on caster feet.

Shop-Vac sells several near-identical 12 gallon SVX2 models at different prices, which is worth knowing before you order. On the same page it listed a stainless version at $287.22 and a Contractor Series version at $267.75.

This is a documentation review built from Shop-Vac's product page and its home use warranty page. We did not vacuum with it.

Who the SVX2 utility vac is best for

It suits people whose worst jobs involve water and stubborn pickups rather than sheer volume.

  • Basement and laundry-room owners dealing with the aftermath of a failed water heater or washer hose
  • Fixed workshops where a dolly rolls across a concrete floor and never needs carrying
  • Woodworkers clearing offcuts and sawdust after a Milwaukee M18 FUEL circular saw or a DeWalt DCS570 session
  • Owners of dust-producing machines such as an Atomstack laser engraver, where the included high efficiency bag earns its place
  • Storm-prep households that pair a vac with a Champion dual fuel generator for power cuts and flooding
  • Buyers who want the widest included floor tool, since the 14 in. nozzle covers more per pass than the others here

Who should skip it

Three buyers will do better elsewhere.

  • Budget buyers: the Vacmaster 12 gallon lists at $149.99 on its own store with a comparable spec sheet
  • Anyone cleaning a large area: the 12 ft cord means an extension lead or frequent replugging
  • Trades and rental users: the warranty excludes any product used for commercial purposes

The specifications that decide the purchase

Shop-Vac's page splits its figures between a features list and a performance block, both read October 21, 2026.

Performance: airflow maximum 140 CFM, sealed pressure 70 inches, electrical ratings 120 V 60 Hz 11.6 A, peak air watts 370. The page adds that these are ASTM tested with a 2.5 in. diameter Shop-Vac hose.

Features: cord length 12 ft, hose size 2.5 in. diameter, Lock-on hose, SVX2 motor, tank drain, blower feature, dolly tool storage basket, hose holder.

Accessories: an 8 ft by 2.5 in. Lock-On hose, two 2.5 in. extension wands, a 14 in. wet/dry floor nozzle, an 8 in. utility nozzle, a crevice tool, an elbow grip, the dolly tool storage basket and the hose holder.

Filters: cartridge filter, foam sleeve and a 10 to 14 gallon high efficiency disposable filter bag.

What is missing: weight, dimensions, noise level and any owner rating. We read the full page and found none of those, so we print no figure for them.

70 inches of sealed pressure is this vac's real argument

Shop-Vac defines its own terms on the product page, which makes this the easiest of the four pages to read honestly.

The page explains that sealed pressure is how far up a glass tube a vacuum motor will lift a column of water, that maximum sealed water lift is obtained at zero airflow, and that suction pressure decreases as airflow increases.

That trade-off is exactly what the numbers show. At 70 inches of sealed pressure, this is the strongest vac here for pulling water out of a low spot or freeing a wedged object.

At 140 CFM it moves 25 CFM less air than the 14 gallon Ridgid's 165.

Its 370 peak air watts is also the highest figure of the four, which means it performs best of the group at the test point where the two measures are combined.

The page adds the caveat that most spec sheets skip: a dirty filter system can drastically affect suction and air flow, so filters need cleaning and replacing. On a $256.91 vac, that sentence is the most useful on the page.

And a unit warning: the 650 CFM printed on the Ego Power+ leaf blower is free-air blower output, not suction through a 2.5 in. hose.

Peak HP, and why Shop-Vac's own footnote dismisses it

The 5.5 peak HP on this vac is lower than the 6 on the Vacmaster and the 6.0 on the Ridgid HD1400, and it would be a mistake to read anything into that.

Shop-Vac's footnote states that peak horsepower is a term used in the wet-dry vacuum industry for consumer comparison purposes.

The same footnote says it does not denote the operational horsepower of a wet-dry vacuum but rather the motor's output including its inertial contribution in laboratory testing. It adds that in actual use Shop-Vac motors do not operate at the peak horsepower shown.

That is a manufacturer saying, in its own words, that its headline number is not a performance figure.

The measurable input is 11.6 A at 120 V, roughly 1,392 watts, which is in the same range as the Vacmaster's 11.8 A and above the Ridgid HD1400's 10.5 A.

Compare CFM, sealed pressure and air watts. Those three are tested to a standard and the makers publish the standard.

Ease of use: what the 3.9 is built from

Ease is the weakest pillar, and the cord is the main reason.

Twelve feet is short. Both Ridgid models list 20 ft and the Vacmaster 22 ft, which is the difference between reaching across a two-car garage and dragging an extension lead with you.

The dolly format helps in the other direction. A wheeled frame rolls where caster feet skid, the tool basket keeps the nozzles off the floor and the hose holder stops the hose unspooling across the room.

The tank drain means you never lift 12 gallons of water.

The Lock-on hose is a real convenience: a hose that twists onto the inlet does not pull off when you drag the vac by it.

Against it: no published weight or dimensions, so you cannot plan for stairs or a shelf. Ease scores 3.9.

Features: what the 4.3 is built from

The feature set is complete for a general-purpose vac, with the accessory mix tilted toward floors.

The 14 in. wet/dry floor nozzle is the widest included tool in this cluster, and it is the right size for a basement floor or a garage bay. An 8 in. utility nozzle, a crevice tool and an elbow grip cover the detail work.

Filtration ships three ways: a cartridge filter for dry debris, a foam sleeve for wet pickup and a high efficiency disposable bag sized for 10 to 14 gallon tanks.

That is the correct kit, and it means the vac is usable on fine dust the day it arrives.

The blower feature and tank drain are both present, as on the rest of this group.

What is absent is any certification claim. We found no UL, ETL, CSA or HEPA statement in the text of the product page. Features scores 4.3.

Value: what the 3.5 is built from

Value is the problem, and the comparison is direct.

At $256.91 on shopvac.com on October 21, 2026, this vac costs $106.92 more than the 12 gallon Vacmaster Beast at $149.99 on Vacmaster's own store, by our arithmetic.

For that premium you get 10 more inches of sealed pressure, 10 more peak air watts and 3 fewer CFM.

You also get 10 ft less cord and no published weight, where Vacmaster publishes 24.7 lb.

Shop-Vac's own range makes the pricing look stranger still.

On the same page it listed a stainless 12 gallon SVX2 at $287.22, a Contractor Series 12 gallon SVX2 at $267.75 and a 4 gallon SVX2 at $130.82, so the 12 gallon models cluster within $31 of each other with no obvious performance ladder.

Against the Ridgid models, no comparison is possible on price because Ridgid publishes none. Value scores 3.5.

Support and warranty: what the 4.4 is built from

The warranty is strong for a household and void for everyone else, and the wording is worth reading twice.

Shop-Vac's home use warranty page, read October 21, 2026, is headed Full Lifetime Home Use Warranty and states that it applies to the original purchaser only and is not transferable.

It warrants the vacuum, when used for normal household use in accordance with the user manual, to be free from defects in material and workmanship, beginning on the date of purchase and ending when the product becomes unusable for reasons other than defects.

The remedy is replacement of defective parts or the entire product, at Shop-Vac's sole discretion.

The exclusions matter. Accessories and filters are not covered. Any product tampered with or used for commercial purposes is not covered. Defects caused by use of non-genuine Shop-Vac filters or accessories are not covered.

Nor are products purchased, used or operated outside the United States or Canada.

Proof of purchase date is required, and the terms apply to products bought on or after December 1, 2021. One inconsistency: the product page calls it a Limited Lifetime Home Use Warranty while the warranty page header says Full. Support scores 4.4.

What published owner ratings say

Nothing, which is itself worth reporting.

Shop-Vac's product page for item 8251205 showed no star rating and no review count on October 21, 2026. We looked for a rating widget in the page and found none.

That leaves a buyer with no owner signal at all from the maker, against 1,397 reviews on Ridgid's HD1400 page and 2,347 on its WD4070 page the same day.

We could not read retailer review pages for this item that day, so we do not summarise owner complaints we have not seen.

For a $256.91 purchase, the absence of any published feedback on the maker's own store is a reason to buy from a retailer with a return policy you trust.

Safety and certification: what the page does and does not claim

We found no electrical safety listing statement in the text of Shop-Vac's product page or its warranty page.

There is no UL, ETL or CSA mark in the page text, and no HEPA claim for the vacuum.

HEPA appears on the site only in the names of replacement filters, including a CleanStream HEPA cartridge filter sold separately, not as a rating for this machine.

So for EPA lead-safe renovation work on a pre-1978 house, this is not the right tool. A HEPA-material filter fitted to a vac that has not been tested as a sealed system is not the same thing as a HEPA vacuum.

The ordinary rules still apply: no hot ashes, no smouldering debris, no flammable liquids, and the foam sleeve rather than the cartridge filter for wet pickup. Shop-Vac links the user manual from the product page.

One warranty-specific safety note: using non-genuine filters voids coverage for any defect they cause, so the cheap third-party cartridge is a false economy on this model.

Alternatives worth a look

Three alternatives cover most reasons to look past this vac.

Vacmaster Beast 12 gallon. 143 CFM, 60 inches of water lift, 360 air watts, 24.7 lb published, a 22 ft cord and a 5 year household warranty at $149.99 on Vacmaster's own store.

Choose it unless the extra 10 inches of lift is worth $106.92 to you.

Ridgid HD1400. 165 CFM, 56 inches of lift, 301 air watts, a 14 gallon drum, five accessories and a lifetime warranty term, with no published price. Choose it for airflow and volume if a retailer prices it well.

Ridgid WD4070. 4 gallons, 110 CFM, 49 inches of lift, 1-7/8 in. hose. Choose it only for cars, stairs and tight storage.

For the mess that happens outdoors rather than indoors, the Sun Joe pressure washer and the Greenworks 40V mower are the relevant tools.

Where a shop vac fits in a first tool kit is covered in our first power tools for homeowners guide, and the saws that create most of the debris are ranked in our cordless circular saw guide.

Buy it if / Skip it if

The decision in one list.

  • Buy it if water cleanups are the reason you are buying a vac at all
  • Buy it if a rolling dolly, a 14 in. floor nozzle and a Lock-on hose suit your floor plan
  • Buy it if you will use genuine Shop-Vac filters and keep the receipt for the lifetime warranty
  • Skip it if $106.92 over the Vacmaster matters more to you than 10 inches of lift
  • Skip it if a 12 ft cord will annoy you every time you use it
  • Skip it if the vac will see any commercial use, which voids the warranty

Frequently asked

Short answers to the questions people search before buying this Shop-Vac.

Bottom line

This is the suction pick of the cluster.

Shop-Vac lists 70 inches of sealed pressure and 370 peak air watts, the highest of the four, with 140 CFM, a 12 gallon tank, a dolly with a tool basket, a 14 in. floor nozzle and three filtration parts in the box.

The costs are the shortest cord here at 12 ft, no published weight or dimensions, and no owner rating on the page.

Add a warranty that voids on commercial use or non-genuine filters, and a $256.91 price that sits $106.92 above a 12 gallon Vacmaster with a similar spec sheet.

Buy it if your worst recurring job is water in a basement. For general garage cleanup, the cheaper 12 gallon does the same work.

Best for

Water cleanups and stubborn pickups in a fixed workshop, where 70 inches of sealed pressure and a rolling dolly matter more than the price on the label.
