Machine Unpacked exists because tool marketing is a fog of torque numbers and action shots that tell you nothing about which machine fits which job. We cut through it: specs decoded, owner reports weighed, plain English, honest verdicts.
Our rule: recommend the tool we'd tell a neighbor to buy - and warn you off the ones owners keep returning.
How we review
Torque numbers alone do not earn a verdict here. Each machine is compared on power, battery platform, price, warranty, and parts availability, weighed against what owners report, then rated 1 to 5 on ease of use, features, value for money, and support. The overall score is the average of those four on a 10-point scale, where above 9.0 is outstanding and 8.5 is excellent.
What this method does not include
The FAQ on this page answers the personal-use question with a plain no, and this section keeps it that way. Scores come from power and battery-platform comparisons, the published torque and capacity figures, warranty and parts availability, and what owners report on real jobs. Where a brand publishes no figure for a spec, the page says it is not published rather than borrowing one from a retailer listing.
How something gets on the list
Machines get covered because people are already deciding between two battery platforms, not because a brand pays well for referrals. Several tools ranked here earn nothing. Ranking by commission is the one thing that would make a tool ranking worthless.
Our independence
Some of the links on this page are affiliate links, and a purchase through one may pay us a commission. It buys nothing else - the rule is that we point you at the machine we would tell a neighbour to buy, and warn you off the ones owners keep returning.
Corrections
Tool prices, kit contents and warranty terms change without notice, so each figure carries the date it was read. If a spec no longer matches the brand's page, send what you are looking at and it gets rechecked. Corrections with a source are handled first.
