Autel MaxiCOM MK808S
The MK808S is the sweet spot in Autel's huge scanner range: a proper Android tablet that reads and clears codes on all vehicle systems - ABS, airbag, transmission, TPMS, not just the engine - plus the service functions that usually force a shop visit: oil-life resets, electronic parking brake release for pad changes, battery registration, throttle relearns. It reads fast, covers an enormous vehicle list, and pays for itself the first time it turns a mystery light into a named part. Downsides are real but livable: the interface has translation quirks, bidirectional active tests are limited versus Autel's pricier tiers, and renewing software updates after the included year costs money. For the serious DIYer, this is the one to get.
Why we rate it
- All-system diagnostics, not just engine codes - reads ABS, SRS, transmission, body modules
- Service resets that normally force a shop visit: EPB, oil reset, battery registration, SAS, throttle relearn
- Fast boots and scans on a responsive Android tablet; auto-VIN identifies most cars instantly
Keep in mind
- Annual software update renewal after year one is the hidden cost of ownership
